"When Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall announced his retirement in July 1991, President George Bush nominated Clarence Thomas, an African-American judge he had previously appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals, to take his place. Despite their shared color, Thomas, with his opposition to affirmative action and the right to abortion, could not have been more politically removed from Marshall, who in his thirty-four years on the court had helped fortify the government's liberal position on both issues. As Thomas's confirmation hearings got underway, his conservative beliefs threatened to sink the nomination, though he managed to elude controversy by refusing to state his position and promising impartiality in his decisions. At the beginning of October, the climate of the hearings changed dramatically when Anita Hill, a former aide of Thomas, stepped forward to accuse him of sexual harassment. Hill initially requested that the Senate Judiciary Committee not make public the details of her charges, but the controversy was such that beginning on October 11, 1991, televised hearings were held on Thomas's conduct. Here, Senator Joseph Biden, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, is heard convening the special hearings and reminding Congress and the public that "this is not a hearing about the extent and nature of sexual harassment in America." Nevertheless, the televised spectacle proved to be exactly that, and Americans were shocked by both the frankness of Hill's lurid testimony and the unsympathetic response of the all-male committee, some of whom were openly antagonistic toward Hill. Thomas, meanwhile, denied the charges, and some witnesses called on his behalf cast doubt on Hill's character and mental stability. On October 15, the Senate voted 52 to 48 to confirm Thomas to the Supreme Court. Although the hearings left the Senate and the nation deeply divided,"
Quote from an unknown news source about the senate hearing conducted by Joseph R. Biden, Jr., U.S. Senator of Delaware, U.S. Capitol, Washington, D.C., October 11, 1991Justice Thurgood Marshall understood the rights and freedoms of the individual.
Justice Clarence Thomas rules against individual rights, and favors the government intruding into the life of every american.
I found Anita Hill to be very credible, and many African-American and civil rights organizations opposed Justice Thomas' nomination.
One thing is certain, either Anita Hill is a liar, or Justice Clarence Thomas is a bald faced liar under oath.
There are no perfect people, but character must be considered for the very important position of US Supreme Court Justice.
